Box Office Smash Sum´08
The Summer of 2008 was indeed one huge pile of Blockbuster madness. More comic book movies then ever before, even more heroes of the 1980´s returning and also, a Will Smith movie that in the tradional sense seems to be awesome…before you go and see it. This is the Film Zine officiall Box Office Smash of Sum´08 Top 10.
10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Not that it all seemed that good beforehand, with an 20-30 years older (i dont know the exact facts) Harrison Ford in the lead, and script after script that went turned down. But hey, at least i would have believed that it would be a little entertaining. It had Spielberg to direct, and excellent Blockbuster-screenwriter David Koepp (Spider-Man and so on) behind it. But hey, just WOW! This movie turned out to be a huge failure in every sense possible. And i cant help myself to start wonder how lame all of the other scripts George Lucas turned down must have been!
09. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Okay, i can accept a third The Mummy film, i liked both of the previous ones and its not everyday you actually see the all so charming Brendan Fraser in a movie of this scale nowadays so..Sure, i pay the ticket! But hey! Whats up? This is just not right! Where is Rachel Weisz? Why is their son just as old as they are? Why the hell are their a bunch of Chinese people turning into Mummys? That was an Egypitan thing! And…Snow people? Jet Li turning into a huge dragon? Well…woho!
08. Hancock – Will Smith always seem to end up doing this. He does movies that seems to be all interesting before hand, but then they just end up as a pile of crap. Before ¨Hancock¨ it was ¨I am Legend¨ and the fun thing is that both of these movies is based on the best ideas ever! But they both fail to turn it into good movies, mostly because they cant decide on what kind of movei they want to do! Hancock is fun the first 20-30 minutes but then its just transforms itself to a regular action-superhero movie. But atleast Charlize is nice to look at, right?
07. Iron Man - I dont actually hate this movie, i actually feel that it was kinda OK but still i really have a lot to complain about. First of all, i love Robert Downey Jr. He is a great actor and i believe that he is the main reason that i like this movie at all, because otherwise…The movie crook played by Jeff Bridges is just lame, almost lamer then Nick Nolte in Ang Lee´s Hulk (2003). The movie speeds through every event in a sence that make it feel a bit unserious, and sure its a Comic book film..what to expect? Well…Nolan did a pretty good job with Batman so…
06. Rambo - I had a huge crush on John Rambo as a little kid, running around in the wild with my Soft Air Guns shooting at threes and stuff. No not really, but at least i really liked the three first movies. But this fourth film is just bad. Very very bad. Sylvester Stallone just looks old…and old. And he doesnt really do anything in the film, he just shows up once in a while and shoot people. So..well…Ew.
05. Mamma Mia – I actually know the main reason that i just dont like this film very much. And thats because it is so made for wiman and wiman only. Not only did i sat in the teather as basicly the only male, the movie was filled with…i dont even want to think about it. Just so feminine in a really scary sence, and since i didnt grew up back in the ABBA days i cant really dig to the tunes either. But yeah. Give a ticket to this movie to your mom, she will love it.
04. The X-Files: I Want to Believe – The X-Files series was never by cup of tea, so to speak. Not that i often do drink tea but you get the picture. But i did like ¨Fight the Future¨ back in 1998 and i sure have seen some X-files episodes and well, quite liked them even if not so much that i actually followed the series. This movie though, aside from the series, doesnt really impress. It is just…unimpressing. The story, the events, the characters. Basicly just tiresome. And not very X-files either, and im not even a huge fan.
03. Wanted - Angelina Jolie is angry, she shows a little skin and well yeah, there you have a typical Angelina Jolie movie. This movie although must have been the worst to date. Totally lame and the whole Curv the Buttles things just made me sick. Seriously, it did.
02. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Except from ¨Attack of the Clones¨ i have no problem with the Star Wars franchise at all. The Return of the Jedi is a awesome movie, i love the enviroments in the Phantom Menace and hey, i believe Revenge of the Sith to be a good ending to the ¨new¨ trilogy. But this, is this a joke? I surely hope that their wont be any more of these movies. Piece of crap.
01. Babylon A.D – The fun thing is that i dont even consider Vin Diesel being a bad actor. He was great in Saving Private Ryan, Pitch Black and Knockaround Guys but these days something just doesnt seem right, And Babylon A.D is just another recent proof of that. This is the 2008 version of the Chronicles of Riddick, basicly a lame picture with great special effects and such but it has no sprit at all. Unfortunetely.
So yeah, that is THE Box Office Smash list of Summer 2008. So what where the movies that actually was good? Well..their were few but obviously ¨The Dark Knight¨ was this summer big love interest for not just comic-fans but also film-fans in general. Great movie.
